The Seed Ecology and Conservation Laboratory conducts research in the areas of long-term ex situ seed conservation, germination ecophysiology, and seed longevity (accelerated aging, soil seed banking, and gene banking). The primary targets of these studies are alpine plants, but not limited to them, testing their germination requirements, dormancy, and longevity, along with their associated functional traits.
The laboratory’s work is closely linked to that of the Plant Germplasm Bank. The laboratory also monitors the impacts of climate change on wild flora and propagates rare/threatened species for conservation purposes (e.g., reintroductions).
